Golf is the reason to come to the North Coast, but it is rarely the only thing you do. The Lake Erie shore between Huron and Sandusky packs a resort’s worth of variety into a small footprint: courses on the water, a famous amusement pier, island ferries, harbor towns and some genuinely good lakeside dining. Here is how to turn a round at Sawmill Creek into a weekend.
Where to base yourself
Most golf visitors set up near the lake around Huron and Sandusky. Staying on the water puts you minutes from the Fazio course and the region’s other public tracks, and it keeps evenings easy — a short drive from your tee to your dinner. When to come
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots. May, June, September and October generally deliver the firmest turf, the most comfortable temperatures and the best color — October in particular sets the hardwoods along the Creek Nine ablaze. Midsummer is lively and warm with a lake breeze to take the edge off; peak-summer weekends are busiest because the region is also a family-vacation magnet, so book tee times and rooms ahead. Pair golf with the lake
Between rounds, the North Coast gives you options that most golf destinations cannot. Catch a ferry out to the Lake Erie islands — Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay are day-trip classics — or spend an afternoon on the water, at the beach, or wandering the harbor shops of Vermilion and Huron. Families traveling with non-golfers have the region’s marquee amusement park and waterparks close at hand, which makes it easy to sell a golf trip to the whole household. The Lake Erie Shores & Islands bureau and Ohio’s state tourism site are the best places to build the non-golf half of the itinerary.
A sample golf weekend
- Friday: Arrive, loosen up with an afternoon nine at an everyday course, and settle in lakeside. Dinner at the 19th hole.
- Saturday: Your marquee round on the Fazio course at Sawmill Creek in the morning; an island ferry or beach afternoon; a harbor-town dinner.
- Sunday: A second eighteen inland at Eagle Creek or a relaxed municipal loop before the drive home.

The North Coast is easy to reach — roughly forty-five minutes from Cleveland and Toledo, and a straightforward drive from Columbus, Detroit or Pittsburgh.
